Sick…and a remedy

It’s pushing 3AM, and I’m sick. I’ve been lying in bed half awake, half asleep all night with feverish dreams running through my head. So I decided I might as well get up and try to do something about it.

Cold medicine, especially Nyquil and the like, makes me feel terrible. The cure is worse than the disease! So I don’t take it unless I’m pretty desperate.

Instead, I’m trying a little concoction I call “fresh ginger, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and honey steeped in hot water”

Catchy name, eh?

I don’t know if it’ll get me to sleep, but it sure is relaxing and makes my throat feel better.

Pictures from the Camino

Here are a few of the pictures I took while walking the Camino (hosted on Picasa)

Camino de Santiago

We´re finally on our way. Pretty amazing to see Spain this way, but very hard. We’re extremely sore.

Last night we stayed in an Alburgue in Grañion, which was attached to a church from (I believe) the 15th century. They don´t turn anyone away, and it was over-full, so we wound up sleeping on the floor of the church. Crazy.

This particular Albergue also had a communal dinner, which was amazing. Had a short hike today to Belodoro, where I am now. More (with pictures) soon.

It is my birthday

That is all.

Blogging with a crutch?

So I can post to my blog using an iPhone application now. Hmm…maybe I’ll post more often. We’ll see. :)

A Year

Yeah…the ol’ blog’s still on life support! It’s been just shy of a year, but here’s a post…you know. Just to show how much I care.

James Brown is Dead…

Holy shit…a moment of silence…

Grrr…Vegan Cookies

Vegan cookies are hard. I mean, rather, they’re difficult, and can be hard if you overbake them.

There’s about a 30 second window between “not done” and “burnt”. So I burnt the first batch. The second batch was underdone, but still eatable. The last batch was just about right.

Thing about vegan cookies is that they don’t brown properly. The butter and eggs in normal cookies promote browning. So they look as white as my white-ass ass. But they taste good! These particular cookies were carob chip oatmeal banana cookies. The banana sort of replaces the eggs. Sort of.

Here is the recipe. You’ll probably need to add more flour and oats than the recipe calls for.

On Batches and Cookie Delivery Vehicles

Updated Score:
Total time spent: 6 hours
Time spent last night: 2 hours
Cookies baked: 14
Varieties baked: 1
Cookies distributed: 8

So I got off to a bit of a slow start. Instead of baking the whole night, I decided I needed to make a couple special cookie deliveries.

The recipe I used comes from the May 2005 issue of Cooks Illustrated magazine. You can find it online at http://www.cooksillustrated.com (though registration to the site may be required). Look for Chocolate-Chunk Oatmeal Cookies with Pecans and Dried Cherries and note that I omitted the lame ass dried fruit.

This particular recipe only makes about 16 cookies. Not quite enough for the scale that I’m going for, so I’m gonna make the recipe again, but double the batch size. 32 cookies seems about right.

Batch size determined, I also realized that I need a good cookie delivery vehicle. I used ziplock bags last night, but they aren’t really all that nice. Functional, to be sure, but I need something a bit more swoopty. So I’m working on that, and I’m sure many of you will see some sort of crazy cookie packaging. Suggestions welcome.

Operation Cookie Bake and Status

(These are some mass emails I sent yesterday and this morning. I realized they’d make good blog posts. So here they are.)

Be warned: Next time any of you see me, there’s a better than decent
chance that I’ll be forcing cookies upon you. I do take requests,
but I’ll ignore the requests if they’re stupid (who eats cookies with
raisins in them, anyway?). Unless you’re awesome. In which case,
I’ll even do the stupid requests.

Time spent in cookie related activities: 4 Hours

So I got home from work and started pouring through my cookbooks and
the internets looking for good cookie recipes (vegan cookies were an
especially interesting avenue of exploration, since I haven’t made
them before). Four hours later, while I had no cookies baked, I did
have 11 solid recipes that made the cut.

I was going to bake a batch last night, but a late halloween night in
Portland caught up with me, and I ended up going to bed.

So it looks like the baking will start tonight. If I can get a
couple batches done in time, I might go out and find the Happy Hour
crowd so they can plunder the spoils of my baking. We’ll see.

Anyway: First recipe is going to be Oatmeal/Chocolate Chunk/Pecan.
Then it’ll be vegan Oatmeal-Chocolate Chip.

I’ll reveal more soon.

By my estimation, when I finish this crazy scheme, I will have baked
around 250 cookies. Wow.
